A New Solution to Water Purification in Rural Areas

A New Solution to Water Purification in Rural Areas A New Solution to Water Purification in Rural Areas A New Solution to Water Purification in Rural AreasIts been said that water is life, as necessary as food and oxygen to human survival. But theres anotlageher side to that story.Unsanitary water can also be a health risk, killing more than 500,000 people worldwide every year, according to the World Health Organization. And this problem is only going to get worse. By 2025 half of the worlds population will be living in what are known as water-stressed areas, where access to clean water is limited or nonexistent. Some 844 million people will lack basic drinking water and another 159 million will be dependent on untreated surface water sources. This is primarily a problem in the developing world, where as many as 38 percent of health care facilities are operating without modern water treatment and roughly the same amount dont even have clean soap and water for hand washing. These are re gions where clean water is hard to come by and related illnesses, including cholera, dysentery, typhoid and more, are widespread. Money and investment to solve these problems are also limited, preventing developments that could save lives.Enter Guihua Yu and his research gruppe at The University of Texas at Austin. For You Technology Brings Clean Water and Nutrition to Central AmericaYu, a professor of materials science and mechanical engineering at the school, has developed a new, low-cost way to treat water safely and effectively in the field without the need for electricity or powered components using a distillation process that combines gel-polymer materials and the power of the sun.Right now, people mostly use multi-stage flashing or multi-effect distillation for water desalination, Yu says. So basically you need to get rid of the salt so the water can become drinkable. But these traditional industrial scale technologies require a lot of energy and they also require very signi ficant infrastructure.New technology could benefit hundreds of thousands of people with restricted access to clean drinking water. The Texas teams solution eliminates both of these needs by tapping solar energy to drive its process. Arguably the cheapest, most abundant energy source in the world, solar allows water samples to be purified anywhere, at any time, without any specific infrastructure or tools. Distillation is a common technique for producing clean water, and the development by Yus team utilizes hydrogels networks of polymer chains that offer high water absorbency rates with both hydrophilic (attracted to water) and semiconducting (solar-adsorbing) properties, allowing for the production of safe drinking water from almost any source, from seawater to contaminated freshwater.Thats a potential game-changer for water safety in the developing world.A Materials SolutionIn this work we actually used a hyper-hydrogel, Yu says. That means that this hydrogel is not one component, but rather is actually two different polymers that are chemically blended together. One polymer is a water-soluble polymer called a polyvinyl alcohol, or PVA. So PVA can actually store water, and it can contain a very significant amount of it, typically over 95 percent. The other component is called polypyrrole (PPy) that has a molecule structure that is conjugated so they can actually act as a semi-conductor just like solar panels. Polypyrrole is one of the components that can absorb the solar energy so you convert solar energy to locally heat up these polypyrrole, polyvinyl and PVA networks. Its a complex process, but it works. The hydrogel, which already contains a lot of water, heats up by absorbing energy from the sun. Once the level of water in the hydrogel is evaporated off and distilled, it starts to pull in untreated water that begins to evaporate. By evaporating the water off and capturing it youre able to get rid of whatever salt or other contaminates are in the water, mak ing it safe for drinking. Its a self-sustaining system that replenishes itself over and over again and keeps treating water until the solar energy used to power the verdunstung runs out.Desalination was used to demonstrate the technologys potential because salt is notoriously difficult to remove from water. The hydrogel-based system can also filter out a number of different contaminants or pollutants from unsafe water. Its also worth noting that the hydrogel material can be used over and over again it doesnt get clogged up with salt or contaminants and replaced between uses. As long as the hydrogels are kept wet so that salt cant crystallize they can work continuously for long periods of time. In testing, Yus team demonstrated that the system could operate unimpeded for more than a month without any decay in overall performance. The findings were first published in Nature Nanotechnology.Scaling PurificationRight now, Yu says the hydrogel materials that are used in the process are focu sed on household use, with 8- to 12-inch wafers that can be used to treat a few gallons of water at a time. At that scale, he says, the technology can likely have the most immediate impact.Even given this current system with the current materials, its not like we are talking about spending $1,000 to build this instrument, Yu says. You can have a simple design with a container and these solar-sopping hydrogel materials and then just start collecting water. Because it can be continuous use, we dont need to have a cleaning system, so you can just put it into the sink and if you have a continuous water supply you dont even need to do anything to enable this water washing.Yu, who has two patents related to this hydrogel technology, says the next step for his team is to find even cheaper, better performing materials than the PVA and PPy that the system currently uses and to find ways to truly scale the system. Theyre working with water researchers and civil engineers at the university to develop more systematic evaporation systems that are capable of solar-treating far larger water samples than is currently possible, focusing on bacteria and foreign organic materials contamination. We are ready to partner with industry to look into really translating our research to household use at first and then, as we find better and cheaper materials, I think we are going to be ready to work with bigger roles, Yu says. Reducing Healthcare Business Risk While Increasing Value

Reducing Healthcare Business Risk While Increasing ValueReducing Healthcare Business Risk While Increasing ValueReducing Healthcare Business Risk While Increasing Value Girotra and Serguei Netessine, authors of The Risk-Driven Business Model Four Questions That Will Define your Company (Harvard Business Review Press, 2014)Large general hospitals face a wide range of risks, the stakes of which are dramatically higher than those faced in most other industries. The risks fall into four main categories1)There is the purely medical risk of contagion associated with the interaction of the many patients and procedures that a general hospital handles. For example, infectious patients can kill relatively healthy ones.About a hundred thousand people die every year in the United States from infections acquired inside the hospital. Most of ansicht are spread through ventilation systems or caused by improper sanitization and disinfecting procedures. Much of this risk arises from the decision to s ervice any and all patients in the same facility.2)Many information risks result from variable, highly unpredictable demand. Emergency rooms, for example, can be overwhelmed by flu epidemics, industrial or highway accidents, or multiple gunshot victims, all on top of the steady flow of uninsured patients who come to the ER for routine medical care.3)Information flow in a general hospital can be a challenge, especially around shift changes, leading to characteristic inefficiencies. For example, unless accurate patient status information is exchanged between departing and arriving nurses, elements of care can either fall through the cracks or be duplicated needlessly (sometimes dangerously).4)Finally, incentive-alignment inefficiencies sometimes come into play when doctors and others make decisions motivated by reasons other than the patients best interest.New Approachs to Walk-In CareNone of these problems exist at Laastari Lhiklinikka, a chain of small Finnish clinics located in sho pping malls and other densely populated areas. The clinics pursue a focused what strategy by treating a limited set of the most common illnesses, including allergies, colds, sore throats, flu, and simple infections. They also administer the most common vaccinations. Depending on a patients needs, the fee for a visit might range between 25 and 45 approximately $33 $59 US Dollars (the same services would likely cost 100 $132 at a Finnish general hospital). Clinics are open seven days a week, require no appointment, and claim to have earned 100 percent customer satisfaction.Patient experiences are mora predictable in the clinics, where there is lower risk than in a general hospital of coming into contact with virulent infectious diseases. Laastari Lhiklinikka saves on labor costs by having nurses, not physicians, deliver services and it saves on infrastructure because the clinics dont need expensive diagnostic equipment. (Patients whose needs go beyond what the clinics can provide are, of course, referred to a full-service hospital.)All procedures take ten to fifteen minutes of provider time. This makes workloads predictable and long lines unlikely, which in turn enables staff utilization to approach its theoretical maximum. Laastari Lhiklinikka is neither unique nor the first such health-care venture to realize the risk-reducing benefits of focus. The US-based MinuteClinicchain has been around since 2000, offering a similar list of limited services provided by nurse practitionersor physician assistants at roughly six hundred centers in CVS pharmacy stores.According to the latest data, MinuteClinics operating costs were 40 percent to 80 percent lower than in general hospitals, yet the entire chain of clinics broke even in 2010 and has continued to grow (CVS Caremark acquired the chain in 2006).Offering More than Walk-In CareFocused health-care approaches can do more than administer vaccines or treat cold and flu symptoms.A small Canadian hospital called Shouldiceh as done nothing but repair abdominal hernias since 1945. Its focus on one particular surgery has allowed it to deliver superior quality at a far lower cost than a general hospital could ever achieve. Yet it offers its doctors and nurses higher salaries than do other hospitals.Although Shouldice is a private hospital in the mainly government-run Canadian medical system, the government happily pays for Shouldice surgeries because they are less expensive than elsewhere. And there is a steady stream of cash-paying US patients who are regularly drawn to Canada by Shouldices reputation for quality. (Shouldice, after seventy years on its own, welches acquired in September 2012 by Toronto-based Centric Health.)Since hernias are neither life-threatening nor thought to be especially complicated, they are often performed by general surgeons. However, since Shouldice operates only on hernias, over time it has perfected a quick and efficient production-line approach. There is just one basic proced ure, and Shouldice has standardized it the way Henry Ford standardized automobile assembly a hundred years ago. Moreover, because each doctor performs hundreds of procedures every year, individual surgeons attain high proficiency very quickly. The quality of patient outcomes is consequently also high, with customer satisfaction to match.Offering Quality Healthcare for LessHernia repair is far from being the most complicated procedure a focused hospital can perform. In 2011, The Economist honored Indian cardiac surgeon Devi Shetty with an award in the field of business process innovation. The award cited Shettys Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitalin Bangalore for reducing health-care costs using mass-production techniques. His hospital performs more heart operations at a lower cost and a lower mortality rate than leading American hospitals.Narayana Hrudayalaya employs forty-two cardiac surgeons who do more than three thousand bypass surgeries per year, along with many other less demanding ca rdiac procedures.Shetty, like Shouldice, drew inspiration from automobile assembly lines. Japanese companies reinvented the process of making cars, Shetty told the Wall Street Journal. Thats what were doing in healthcare. What healthcare needs is process innovation, not product innovation. We are not suggesting that general hospitals are a thing of the past. Many patients suffer from a number of ailments in combination and are best served by large, multi-specialty institutions. But focus can be a powerful strategic lever in any number of industries.Reprinted by permission of Harvard Business Review Press. Lonely A mindfulness app used in a study might be able help

Lonely A mindfulness app used in a study might be able helpLonely A mindfulness app used in a study might be able helpLoneliness and isolation is our modern affliction, fueled by technology that keeps our communication virtual and remote. Former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy has said there is a loneliness epidemic, and social isolation is increasingly a public health concern for people of every age. Loneliness is especially dangerous because it is contagious, Dr. Murthy said one persons loneliness can have an effect on another person.Researchers at Carnegie Mellon, Virginia Commonwealth and Pennsylvania State Universities developed a smartphone-based mindfulness training that a study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, showed can help people feel less lonely and encourage them to reach out to others.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe researchers used acceptance skills training, a mindfulness meditation technique, delivered via smartphone, in a controlled trial. The mindfulness technique had two components the first welches learning to pay attention and be aware of to monitor your experiences in the present. For example, you can musiknote how your body feels, what youre thinking, any images that flit through your head. The second step was to learn how to be open to and accept those experiences, instead of judging or labeling them. Instead, simply keep an open mind. For example, you can observe the experience of waiting in an extremely long line without judging it as irritating, or even the thing thats going to ruin your day and shorten your temper. Instead, simply observe it, and take it for what it is neither positive nor negative.Learning to be more accepting of your experience, even when its difficult, can have carryover effects on your social relationships. When you are more accepting toward yourself, it opens you up to be more available to others, J. David Creswell, associate professor of psychology and researcher, said in a release. For the study, over 150 adults were randomly assigned to one of three 14-day smartphone-based mindfulness interventions. One group received training in monitoring and acceptance skills for 20 minutes each day. Another was given training in monitoring skills only. A third group received no mindfulness training, but instead was taught common coping techniques. Each group was also given brief daily homework assignments. The resultsParticipants that received training in monitoring and acceptance skills saw the greatest benefits a 22% reduction in daily loneliness, and increased social contact by an average of two interactions each day.The monitoring-only mindfulness group, which did not get acceptance skills training, did not show any benefit. It seems that acceptance a key part of the equation.Loneliness and social isolation are among the most robust known risk factors for poor health and early death. But so far, few interventions have been effective for reducing loneliness and increasing social contact, said Emily Lindsay, who led the study as a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon and who is now a research scientist at the University of Pittsburg, in a release. Our research shows that a 14-day smartphone-based mindfulness program can target both, and that practice in welcoming and opening to all of our inner experiences - good or bad - is the key ingredient for unterstellung effects, said Lindsay.Although the mindfulness app was only designed for the study, we hope the researchers will turn it into a real product that we can all buy from Google Play. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEO s10 habits of mentally strong people

Female Leadership in the Automotive Industry

Female Leadership in the Automotive Industry Female Leadership in the Automotive Industry The Dodge Charger team is a diverse and high performance group,Chris Barman, Vehicle Line Executive of the E Segment Platform, Chrysler Group LLC said. It is important to recognize this team includes a higher than modell percentage of women in key leadership positions. This diversity is a source of energy, innovation and unconventional perspectives that enable the Dodge Charger to be a very special product.Barman makes a key distinction here. She points out that Chrysler is not merely hiring a large percentage of women, but also a substantial number of women in leadership positions. As the currently playing movie Made in Dagenham demonstrates, it is not enough to feel among ones peers on the work floor. Without support from people in leadership positions, workers lack real representation. Corporate leadership often acknowledges the importance of equality, but does not commit to actually placing women and minorities in key executive leadership positions. Recognition and accolades such as these play a small but important role in making a corporate statement of policy.

Like Your Way to the Best Employees

Like Your Way to the Best EmployeesTweet all about it If youre wondering why everyone is talking about social media this week, the answer is obvious the last week in September is also Social Media Week. With the movers and shakers of the social media universe getting together to talk about the future of connecting and sharing, it seemed like a good time to look at how social media giants find the best employees to keep innovating their services. On Monday, we took a look at how Twitter uses 140 characters to snag great employees. Today, well be looking at the papa bear of all social networks facebook inc. Its the biggest social network at 955 million users from all over the globe. Its also the only social network to have an Oscar winning movie made about its origins. If you want to hire like the best and biggest social networks, facebook inc is where you should start.Facebook might have been created in a dorm room by founder Mark Zuckerberg, but today the company has 3,976 employees i n offices all over the world. Heres how Facebook gets top talent to keep liking their companyPut Your Values Front and CenterThe first thing you see on Facebooks career webpage is a list of the companys most important values. This is because Facebook recognizes the importance of having employees who align with their core values, not just the skill sets they need at the moment. Employees who live up to the values of the company are going to be the same employees who stick around your organization for the long haul. When youre interviewing a candidate, whether in person or through a video interview, keep a sharp eye out for organizational match. What are the candidates goals? What values do they hold? Will they thrive in a fast-paced environment where things change rapidly from day to day? Or are they better in a more stable environment where they can watch projects theyve implemented flourish? There is no perfect employee, but there is a perfect employee for your company. If you put y our values front and center, youre more likely to attract candidates with similar working styles.Give Examples of What Life is LikeOn the Facebook career page, directly below the company values are a variety of videos. Just like we mentioned with Twitter earlier this week, Facebook realizes the value of zugnglich video in the hiring process. As a company, Facebook uses these videos to give an insight into what the company is really like and what life looks like for an employee. Some of the videos give concrete examples of specific projects Facebook employees have worked on, including the challenges and the rewards for employees who were ready to meet those challenges head on.You need to give interested applicants a taste of what life is like at your company. Well talk about discussing perks below, but you know your company isnt just a bunch of benefits. It can be hard work and you need motivated employees who are going to relish the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get movin g. Utilizing online video is one way to give a peek inside your company. You can also stress what life is really like in the video interview. The important thing is to give candidates insight so you end up with employees who stick around, not bail at the first sign of trouble.Stress Company CultureFacebook isnt shy about discussing its company culture. The first video on their career page opens with an employee skateboarding through the office. Facebook knows its laid-back attitude will be a plus for the kind of workers the company is looking to nab. Thus they promote their no rules, innovation first attitude everywhere to stress that this is a place where ideas are welcome. When looking to attract great candidates, dont be shy about promoting your companys benefits. What are the things that make your workplace innovative, fun, and exciting? Get those things front and center while youre recruiting top talent. If your company culture is attractive, youll find great candidates desperat ely want to work with you to develop and grow your business. A good company culture is the best recruitment tool you have.Cultivate DiversityAs the biggest social media network, Facebook understands the power of diversity. By creating a diverse work environment, Facebook is constantly bringing in the new ideas the company needs to survive. In fact, Facebook has a whole fan page devoted to diversity.Your company needs diversity to thrive, and not just because the EEOC says you do. Diversity is the best key to solving stubborn problems and coming up with creative solutions. Weve talked before about how a video interview is 100 percent compliant with all EEOC regulations regarding discrimination. But go beyond compliance and start making your company a more diverse workplace to continue innovating.Facebook might be a social media giant, but that doesnt mean companies of all sizes dont have valuable lessons to learn from the network Mark Zuckerberg built. What are some hiring lessons you ve taken from Facebook? 5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW - FlexJobs

5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW - FlexJobs5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW -30the ideal resume, youll get five different answers. But the important thing is to make your resume as close to perfect as possible. With that in mind, here are five changes to make to your resume right now to make it as effective as possible.5 Changes to Make to Your Resume NOW1) Replace long paragraphs with short bullet points. Recruiters read resumes in 15 to 30 seconds. Try reading yours in that short amount of time and see how far you get. By bulleting your job descriptions and shortening each sentence, you make it easier for recruiters to digest the maximum amount of information about you.2) Start every sentence with a verb. You want to make recruiters see you DOING the things on your resume, and in order to do that, you have to describe your ACTIONS. Start each bullet point with an action verb (present tense for present jobs, past tense for past jobs). For examplePrepare clients in selecting appropriate insurance coverage given situational needsTroubleshoot issues with existing client policies and assist clients in all respectsMentor new agents and provide advice and guidance using strong interpersonal skills3) Make your formatting consistent. Every section title (Experience, Education, Certifications, Summary of Qualifications, etc.) should be the saatkorn font size and style. Your spacing should be the same throughout.4) Add numbers throughout. The more things you can quantify, the more detailed picture youll create for recruiters. For exampleExecuted training program for 20+ new employees and continuing education for 100 existing employeesSuccessfully obtained 15 new client companies throughout New EnglandGrew companys Facebook page from 500 fans to 6,000 in six months5) Be descriptive with companies and job titles. If you worked for a company that isnt well-known whose name doesnt convey their line of business, add that detail onto your resume. And if your job titl e is confusing or vague, add some detail to that as well. Using parentheses works for both situations. For exampleClient Service Representative (customer service)Bennett McLain LLC (computer software)For more job search tips and tricks, check out5 Uncommon, Excellent Career Tips4 Simple Reasons Youre Not Getting HiredCustomized Resumes and Cover Letters are Better for Your Job Search3 Common Resume Mistakes that are Easy To FixJob Seeking Tips From Top Career Advisor Cheryl PalmerReaders, which of these changes to make to your resume are you going to incorporate into your job search?

5 Interview Alarm Bells That Signal a Job Scam - FlexJobs

5 Interview Alarm Bells That Signal a Job Scam - FlexJobs5 Interview Alarm Bells That Signal a Job Scam -2It pains us to have to still write about job scams, but the sad truth is that job scammers are simply not going away. The interview alarm bells are sounding. And the stats get worse for remote jobs- its estimated that for every real remote job, there are at least60 scams out there. So lets say that you apply for a job that seems legitimate and yourecalled in for an interview. How can you tell if youre possibly smack dab in the middle of a job scam? Well, there are certain interview alarm bells that should ring loud and clear ifyoure finding yourself wrapped up in ajob scam. Here are fiveinterview alarm bells that signal a job scam1. Your qualifications dont really matter. You apply for a job that seems perfect. Its a flexible job and youd be doing exactly what you love- and bonus, youre totally qualified for it But when it comes time for the job interview, your interviewer doesnt re ally ask you that many questions, or worse, it seems that your skill set and work experience dont really seem that important. This is never the case in a real job interview. Employers will put you through the paces, asking you thoroughly about your previous job experience and what makes you a fit for the organization. Mostlikely theyll ask to complete some form of performance test as well. If your interviewer isnt interested in what you bring to the table, you might be in the throes of a job scam.2. Youre offered the job almost immediately.Lets face it Job scammers dont want to conduct lengthy interviews. They just want to lure you in and capture their prey(i.e., innocent job seekers), and then onto the next. So if after 10 minutes of talking with a tauglichkeit employer, the person offers you the job on the spot, dont be flattered- run. Even for an entry-level position, its rare that you would be hired immediately, even if you do have a dazzling personality and a wide array of work experience. So think twice if youre offered a job right away- most companies will typically take a few weeks (maybe even a couple of months) to make their decision.3. The interview is done via instant messaging.Yes, youre a job seeker looking for a remote job. If the company youre looking to work for is based thousands of miles away from where you live, it definitely makes sense that you wouldnt be trekking in for an office interview. That said, job scammers tend to prefer quick ways to contact candidates and conduct job interviews. Their preferred method instant messaging. And again, you might not even raise an eyebrow (heck, you pretty much communicate through IM all day anyway), but job interviews arent usually done via IM.
